***Latest Update***My wife and I are extremely excited to welcome Cora Jean home. She was born on May 20th and Neila and Vera are super excited to meet their new sister.
Hi everyone. My name is Nelson Rodrigues and am looking forward to working with each and everyone of you this school year. I have had the fortunate opportunity to meet New Bedford High School's new leadership team and am anticipating the great improvements that are in store for all students. Before we get our hands dirty, I'd like to introduce myself.
I was born and raised down the road in Fall River, MA. I attended B.M.C. Durfee High School and graduated with High Honors in 1997. I choose to attend college immediately after graduation and moved to New York City to attend Columbia University. Little did I realize then that I had much growing up to do and so I decided to move back home to Massachusetts. I transferred to University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth where I earned my B.A. in Economics.
A series of events, most notably my work experience at St Vincent's Home in Fall River, steered my decision to become a high school teacher. But my decision was very specific. My parents are immigrants from Portugal and my sister and I were raised to appreciate the valuable opportunities that lie within the halls of the American public school system. Because of this, I take extra pride in working for a 21st Century Gateway City. When I became a teacher, I looked forward to using my personal lessons and experiences to help future generations to enrich their own.
My wife (an elementary school teacher) and I live in New Bedford with our 3 daughters and cat, Abigail. Neila is 5 and entering Kindergarten and loves to sing and draw. Vera is 2 and always up to no good. Cora is brand new but we can't wait to see what she has in store for us. This fall will be my 10th year at New Bedford High School and I plan to make it my best yet.
